Laredo, TX— Healthy Living/Viviendo Mejor (HLVM) continues to conduct disease self management and family support to improve healthier choices and improve one’s diabetes, hypertension and weight. The CLHD feels very privileged to share this project with our community. HLVM targets persons at risk of diabetes, persons with diabetes and their family members and teaches them how to improve their lifestyles and make healthier choices through its diabetes education classes, fitness activities, healthy cooking classes and psychosocial support sessions to avoid serious complications like kidney and heart disease and other major health concerns like depression.
An addition that further improves health outcomes is we will be adding a mental health screen to detect early any potential risk of behavioral health (depression). The stress of daily diabetes management can be overwhelming and one may feel alone or set apart from friends and family. For years the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been advocating to include behavioral health screening in annual check-ups. Healthy eating and exercising will continue but now we are adding free depression screening to further improve healthier outcomes. These free interactive sessions are offered to persons with diabetes, their family members and the general public. Everyone who participates receives free diabetes laboratory testing and free depression screening*. Door prizes are available to those that complete the sessions.
The event will take place on Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. at the CLHD Auditorium, 2600 Cedar, Laredo, TX
