(Laredo, Texas)_How Abraham Lincoln tackled immigration in the mid-19th century is the topic of the next International Bank of Commerce (IBC) Keynote Speaker Series featuring Dr. Jason H. Silverman, Eillison Capers Palmer, Jr. Professor of History, Winthrop University, Rock Hill, S.C., on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. in the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Student Center Ballroom.

Admission is free and open to the public. A reception will start at 6:30 p.m.

The lecture series is presented by the TAMIU A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade and sponsored by IBC.

In the mid-19th century, nearly five million immigrants from Germany, Ireland, Scandinavia and México entered the U.S. and faced setbacks and opposition. Dr. Silverman’s presentation, “Thieves, Greasers, and Mongrels: The Great Emancipator Encounters the Immigrant,” examines how Lincoln’s affinity and respect for immigrants developed and why it flourished through his political career and his life, unlike his contemporaries.

Silverman has been a member of the faculty at Winthrop University for over 31 years. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia, his master’s degree from Colorado State University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. He is an author or editor of 11 books and has won numerous awards for his teaching.

His latest book, “Lincoln and the Immigrant,” was published as part of the Southern Illinois University Press Concise Lincoln Library Series.
