Laredo, TX – As part of a continuous commitment to reduce and prevent impaired driving, particularly during football season, the District Attorney’s Office is promoting its 7th annual designated driver initiative: Make the Right Call. On Super Bowl Sunday, February 7th between the hours of 8 p.m. to 12 midnight, the DA’s office will offer free taxi cab rides from any public establishment.
The designated driver initiative is a proactive effort to keep Laredo roads safe and to prevent football fans from driving under the influence of alcohol. According to statistics provided by the Texas Department of Transportation, there were 10,676 alcohol-related crashes in Texas during the 2014 football season (September 4, 2014 – February 1, 2015). Out of these crashes, 492 crashes resulted in fatalities. In Laredo alone, there were 53 alcohol related traffic crashed also during the 2014 football season.
Local bars and restaurants will participate in promoting this initiative by displaying publicity posters, distributing promotional materials and encouraging patrons to make the right call.
For the past six years, the District Attorney’s Office has partnered with International Taxi Company to coordinate this initiative. Last year, 11 people took advantage of this program and prevented crashes and fatalities by having a sober-ride game plan. Football fans can call 956.723.9177 from any local establishment for a free taxi ride home.
