Laredo, Texas:  United ISD was recently awarded a grant from the Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation, Inc. The grant will be used to purchase nebulizers for each campus in the District that will contribute towards the School Based Asthma Treatment Program. Currently, there are over 1,370 students throughout the District who are treated for asthma. Now, a child with this condition may go to their school nurse’s office for treatment.

“We are extremely grateful to the Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation for their generous contribution,” said United ISD Health Services Director Irene Rosales, RN. “A healthy student equals a successful one.”

United ISD Board Vice-President Juan Roberto Ramirez and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos presented members of the organization with a small token of appreciation.

Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation President Ed Gonzalez stated that the organization is pleased to provide the grant to United ISD, since it will contribute towards students’ health and will likely help reduce absences in school.

“Our offices (grants administration and health services) worked on this project for almost a year and it wouldn’t have been possible to get the nebulizers without the help of the Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation,” said United ISD Grants Administration Director Dr. Edie Landeck.

Now in existence for over eight years, Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation is a unique dropout prevention program designed to help at-risk students in United ISD, Laredo ISD and Gateway Academy Charter High School.  The organization works in conjunction with the Laredo Rotary Club.

“A high school diploma is a passport to economic independence,” said Dr. Michael Landeck, Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation Vice-President. “We want to help students succeed in completing their education as a launching point to a productive, happy life.”

To date, the Foundation has given over $213,000 to local students. For the current 2015-16 school year, the Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation will grant $50,000 and expects to serve 60 students.

The Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation awards students $800 per student in scholarships which are distributed quarterly based on passing grades and 90% or better attendance rate as verified by school counselors.

“Our group is continually inspired by our students’ successes, as many of them have to overcome difficult obstacles and hardships,” said Dr. Cecilia Garza, Laredo Diploma Plus Foundation Secretary.
