(Laredo, Texas)-Two sophomores at United High School have launched a program for young science enthusiasts in Laredo. Roberto Ponce and Anthony Martinez have created the Youth Science Leaders of Laredo.
The primary focus of this organization is to get students ages 12 and up involved in science by “unifying them and showing them that science is not just for tests,” said Ponce. He added, “Science is there to benefit you.”
“Science is everywhere and the best way to learn about it is through fun and educational activities,” said Martinez. He added, “At first it would be just us two and we thought why not invite the community and inspire others to make an impact.”
The group held its first meeting in July with City Councilman Charlie San Miguel, Dr. Tashtoush of TAMIU, and current Harvard student Daren Garcia as its first guest speakers. They will continue to meet twice a month at different venues around Laredo where they will be performing community-based projects, listening to guest speakers, and offering free tutoring sessions to their members.
