Campaign encourages community to recognize a young leader in the community
(Laredo, TX ) – Univision Laredo and Sheriff Martin Cuellar congratulate Oscar Medina IV, incoming 9th grade student at United High School for being recognized as the “July 2015 Estrella de la Comunidad.”
Oscar’s nomination stood out amongst dozens of applications because despite his visual impairment and physical challenges at the young age of 10 years old he founded his own non-profit organization called “Oscar’s Clean up Club”. Four years later, Oscar has grown to be a young leader with a passion for the environment and has inspired many to keep his city clean and beautiful. He has collected more than 20,000 pounds of trash and more than 1,000 tires during his clean up campaigns.
“I want to thank my family, friends, and Laredo for always supporting me. No matter what, even if you have a disability anything is possible. Help the environment and keep Laredo beautiful,” said Medina, Award Recipient. Medina plans to attend college and become either an Environmental Scientist or a NASA Aerospace Engineer.
Students can be nominated by their teachers, counselors, coaches, parents, friends and/or family by logging on to http://www.kldotv.com/promocion/estrella-de-la-comunidad/ and completing the nomination form. They must be in good academic standing and attend a local high school or middle school. Students must be 14-18 years old.
Univision Laredo along with Sheriff Martin Cuellar take pride in this new initiative with the intent to promote leadership skills, community involvement, and good academic performance.
Oscar received an Estrella de la Comunidad trophy and certificate award, Great American Cookie cake, $50 coupon to Laredo Pizza Factory, $50 gift card to Wal-Mart, and tablet courtesy of Best Buy.
