Laredo, TX – For the first time this year the Laredo Lemurs (32-26) shut out a team in back-to-back games. The victim of this great pitching was the Joplin Blasters as the Lemurs won 3-0 on Wednesday night at Uni-Trade Stadium.
Henry Garcia got the starting nod for the Lemurs and he was excellent, as he went six complete without giving up a run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Lemurs’ reliever Ryan Beckman came on in the seventh and was stellar as well as he went two innings and put zeros up on the board, facing six batters to earn the win. John Brebbia picked up his ninth save of the year as he walked a tightrope in ninth by walking two straight and giving up an infield hit before he got the final out of the game.
The Lemurs’ runs came in the seventh off newly acquired relief pitcher Luis Chirinos. Chirinos got the first two Lemurs that he faced out but then the offense went to work. Jarred Mederos singled to start the rally. Ty Morrison followed with his second hit of the game to put runners at the corners. Then D’Vontrey Richardson singled and drove in Mederos from third for a 1-0 Lemurs lead. Dustin Gieger was the next batter and during his at-bat both Morrison and Richardson would steal their next base, putting runners at second and third, but the throw to second went into center and that allowed Morrison to score, putting the Lemurs up 2-0 with Richardson at third base. Denis Phipps then doubled to score Richardson from third to give the Lemurs a 3-0 lead.
Luis Chirinos took the loss as he went two thirds of an inning, giving up three runs on four hits with a walk.
The Laredo Lemurs will host the Wichita Wingnuts as the two team’s battle it out for first place in the South Division, game time is at 7:30pm at Uni-Trade Stadium.
