IBC Hosts 3rd Annual Migrant Scholarships Ceremony

(Laredo, Texas)-The UISD Office of Federal and State Compensatory Programs, in conjunction with the Laredo Children Advocates Raising Education Standards for Migrant Students (C.A.R.E.S.) committee, awarded scholarships to 19 Migrant Education Program students during a luncheon/awards ceremony hosted by IBC on June 16, 2015. Laredo C.A.R.E.S committeee sponsors include Mr. Renato Zapata, CEO and Chairman of The Board for International Bank of Commerce in Zapata, Texas, Ing. Humberto Gonzalez Bentancourt from G.E. Electric and A.A. Lic. Eduardo A. Garza Robles from Uni-Trade. The migrant student scholarship program was launched in October of 2012, and has received state and national level recognition for assisting migrant students who have graduated high school and transitioned to institutions of higher learning.
UISD’s Federal & State Migrant Coordinator Veronica Burgoa said that the occasion was designed to recognize and reward some very special students. “These students have overcome adversity and hardship to graduate from high school. The scholarships help them with expenses as they enter colleges and universities. We are very thankful for the genrosity of our sponsors, who continue to advocate for migrant students “, said Burgoa.
