UHS Senior Wins District 28 Congressional Art Contest

(Laredo, Texas)-Congressman Henry Cuellar, District 28, announced Erika Escamilla, a senior at United High School in Laredo, as the winner of the 2015 Congressional Art Competition for Texas’ 28th congressional district. Her winning entry is a pencil portrait of her grandmother entitled Mi Abuelita.
The Congressional Art Competition gives young artists an opportunity to display their work in the United States Capitol Building. Erika’s entry was chosen as the winner out of 92 submissions by high school students from all over Texas’ 28th congressional district, which spans from San Antonio to Laredo and on to Mission, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. “I look forward to welcoming Ms. Escamilla to Washington, D.C., and hope she continues to develop her creativity and talents to achieve further success”, said Cuellar.
United High School Principal Alberto Aleman Jr. praised Escamilla’s efforts to create the beautiful and poignant image of her grandmother. “We are very proud of Erika for winning this prestigious competition. Her talents, dedication to her studies, and continuous improvement to her artistic skills will bring Erika continued success in all her endeavors”, said Aleman. Erika’s art teacher is Laura Salido.
