TAMIU Names Domínguez Head for Emerging Engineering Programs

(Laredo, Tx)- Texas A&M International University has selected a petroleum engineer, government official and academic to develop emerging engineering programs at the University.
Dr. Guillermo Cruz Domínguez Vargas will direct the University’s planned growth in the College of Arts and Sciences’ School of Engineering, with specific interest in engineering and petroleum engineering, said Dr. Pablo Arenaz, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at TAMIU.
“We are delighted to have secured Dr. Domínguez for this emerging area of dynamic potential for TAMIU. He has profound and impressive experience in the field with over 30 years of experience working as an engineer and principal in Mexico’s PEMEX, national experience as a commissioner and advisor for Mexico’s National Hydrocarbons Commission and academic experience as a longtime faculty member in Mexico. His advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Southern California (USC), further enhance his relevance to our programs here,” said Dr. Arenaz.
The University currently offers a pre-Engineering curriculum and a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering. It has been granted permission to develop additional engineering programs including petroleum engineering.
Domínguez, a native of Mexico City, holds his bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), his Masters, also in Petroleum Engineering, was also received at UNAM. His Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering was earned at USC.
In addition to his service with PEMEX, the Mexican state-owned petroleum company, Domínguez was appointed by President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa to the Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos and was director of Petroleum Operations under the Mexican Secretariat of Energy, deputy director of Technology and Professional Development for PEMEX’ Exploration and Production (PEP), and deputy director of planning.
