(Laredo, Tx)-At the start of the school year, George Washington Middle School (GWMS), students were challenged to read a specific number of books per six week period. Students who completed their reading tasks during the 1st and 2nd six weeks challenges were honored during the school’s 1st annual Literacy Rally, which was held on December 5th in the school’s gymnasium.

Special guest speaker Eloy Rendon lectured the students about the importance of reading and being well-prepared for the future. Rendon is a health, wellness and motivational fitness educator for the Make A Difference (M.A.D) Center of Laredo.

Librarian Laura Ortiz praised the students for meeting their reading challenges. “The general objective of the rally was to encourage students to keep reading and to reach the balance of their reading challenges for the remainder of the school year”, said Ortiz.
