The history of baseball in Mexico goes back to the year of 1877, when we say that this sport was played for the first time in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Guaymas, Sonora and station San Juan, Nuevo León.
It should be mentioned that the teams were composed of players from both sides of the border, which confirms the idea of brotherhood since the Foundation in Nuevo Laredo has been with its Texas counterpart. These local teams developed players who subsequently played in the National League, such as Manuel Bocanegra, Catarino and Lucas brothers El Indio¨ Juárez, who was the first player to be inducted in 1939 to the Hall of Fame of the Mexican League. Tomás Valenzuela and Eulalio Solís El Chamuco, both of Laredo, Texas, who participated as reinforcements of the team Athletics of the Mexico of the Capital of the country Club, in the years 1903-1904.
The year of 1940 is essential in the history of professional baseball in Nuevo Laredo, which is when local entrepreneurs invested in a professional team that represented the border in the Mexican League. “The Junta” team debuted on March 30, 1940 in Torreon, Coahuila opposite union Laguna. A few days later, on April 4, 1940, he played the first game of the Mexican League in Nuevo Laredo, where the home team achieved victory against the team of “Los Gallos” of Santa Rosa, Veracruz.
From the inclusion of the representative “The Junta” to the Mexican League, as the fans of the two Laredo’s was growing. In 1949 the team changed name to ¨Tecolotes¨, in reference to the first game of night baseball played in our city on April 23, 1935, this being the first played at night in the world. The “Tecolotes” have been very prominent in the Mexican League, earning five championships in 1953, 1954, 1958, 1977, and 1989, as well as several second place finishes.
