U.S. Customs and Border Protection to Hire Border Patrol Agents

  WASHINGTON —U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency responsible for securing U.S. ports of entry and international borders will accept applications nationwide starting today for Border Patrol agent positions on the Southwest border.

 

 To apply for Border Patrol agent positions, applicants must have an active USA Jobs account and complete an online application at www.usajobs.gov.

 

 Border Patrol agent applicants undergo a rigorous screening process to ensure their eligibility and suitability for employment in a CBP law enforcement position. Applicants must be able to meet the physical demands of the job as well as successfully pass a polygraph test and background investigation. Applicants for the Border Patrol agent position must meet the following key requirements:

 

• U.S. citizenship

 

• Referral prior to 37th birthday (waiver for veterans)

 

• Residency in the U.S. for the last three years

 

• Valid driver’s license

 

• Entrance exam, medical exam, physical fitness tests and drug test

 

• Background investigation and polygraph test

 

• No convictions of misdemeanor crime or domestic violence

 

• Qualify and carry a firearm

 

• Regular and recurring shift work

 

 The Border Patrol agent’s primary responsibilities include:

• Detection, prevention, and apprehension of undocumented aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the land borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions; following up leads; responding to electronic sensor alarms; low-light level television systems; aircraft sightings and infrared scopes during night operations; and interpreting and following tracts, marks and other physical evidence.

 

• Farm and ranch checks; traffic checks; traffic observation; city patrol; transportation checks; and administrative, intelligence and anti-smuggling activities.
