Laredo, TX (Webb County) –A man who eluded Webb County Sheriff’s Deputies and Border Patrol agents earlier this month by plunging his vehicle into the Rio Grande and then swimming to Mexico was arrested Thursday afternoon.
Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Alberto Bernal, 18, in Rio Bravo, and charged him with Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity F/2, Possession of Marijuana F/2, and Evading arrest State Jail Felony.
Earlier this month, deputies working alongside U.S. Border Patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Jeep traveling at a high rate of speed on Highway 83 south. The driver, Bernal, led authorities down Mangana Hein Road, turning onto Cuatro Vientos Road and eventually going through a brushy area until he came to rest in the Rio Grande. Agents and deputies attempted to apprehend Bernal and another suspect, but they made their way into Mexico. More than 180 pounds were found inside of the vehicle.
Bernal was sent to the Webb County Jail in lieu of a combined bond of $219,000.
“Thursday’s apprehension of Bernal is an indication of the arduous work our investigators did to bring the suspect to justice,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar. “Bernal ran from the law at first, but he couldn’t hide from us.”
