St. Paul 9, Quebec 7 (Final/11 Innings)
The Can-Am League’s new extra inning rule made its debut tonight in the interleague matchup between the St. Paul Saints and the Quebec Capitales and both teams took advantage by scoring runs in the 11thinning. The Saints came out on top 9-7 behind 3B Devin Thaut’s first professional homerun.
The Saints were playing catch-up for most of the ball game after Quebec opened up the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. St. Paul tied up the score in the eighth inning as CF Angelo Songco hit a solo homerun. Songco was the runner that started on second base in the top of the 11th and scored on a double from SS Joey Becker but it was Thaut’s three-run blast that made the difference. Thaut went 4-for-5 in the game with two runs scored. Becker was the only other Saint to have more than one hit.
The Capitales rallied in the bottom of the 11th but only pushed across a pair of runs. Offensively for Qubec, SS Jonathan Malo, DH Balbino Fuenmayor and LF Matt Helms each had two hits. Fuenmayor and Helms as well as 3B Matt Provencher had a pair of RBI in the contest.
Gary SouthShore 5, Sioux City 3
The Gary SouthShore RailCats held off a ninth-inning rally from the Sioux City Explorers to snag a 5-3 win on the road Monday night.
The RailCats took the lead early on with two runs in the third inning and then two more in the fourth. At the plate for the RailCats, leadoff man SS Daniel Pulfer set the bar for his teammates as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI. 1B Jeremy Hamilton also went 2-for-4 and scored a run but he and Pulfer were the only RailCats to have more than one hit in the game. For the Explorers, RF Peter Barrows had a strong day at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Explorers strung together a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth but the RailCats brought in reliever Chuck Fontana and he closed the door by recording the final two outs with two consecutive strikeouts.
Laredo 4, Amarillo 1
With the combined efforts of the Laredo pitching staff, the Lemurs held the Amarillo Sox to just three hits and one run as Laredo claimed a 4-1 win at home.
Starter Tyler Pearson picked up the win as he threw the first six innings and allowed just three hits and the one run – a solo homerun from 2B Josh Miller. Pearson struck out seven batters and issued a pair of walks. None of the four relievers Laredo used in the game allowed a hit and reliever Chad Povich wrapped things up in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts to earn the save.
Offensively, four Lemurs had two-hits games including LF/1B Gerardo Avila who had one of the team’s three RBI. 3BJosh Scheffert and RF Harrison Kain both went 2-for-3 and scored a run in the game.
Wichita 11, Kansas City 2
The Wichita Wingnuts put the pedal down at the plate in the first inning and didn’t let up until the final inning as they racked up 12 hits and 11 runs on their way to an 11-2 win over Kansas City.
The Wingnuts took the lead in the first inning with one run and followed that up with three more runs in the second. By the end of the night, the Wingnuts had scored in six of the nine frames including three runs in the top of the ninth to put the nail in the coffin. LF Carlo Testa had a team-high three hits for the Wingnuts while 2B Jake Kahaulelio, CF Brent Clevlen and DH Chris McMurray each had a pair of RBI.
For the T-Bones, 1B Nick Schwaner was the only batter to have more than one hit in the game. Wichita’s Justin Klippwas tough to hit Monday night as he worked seven scoreless innings and allowed just six hits while striking out seven batters.
Winnipeg 3, Sioux Falls 2
The Winnipeg Goldeyes took care of business Monday night with just one inning of offense but it was enough to edge the Sioux Falls Canaries 3-2.
The Goldeyes were trailing by a run entering the third inning when their bats came to life. LF Ray Sadler opened the scoring when he singled home 3B Ryan Pineda. In the next at bat C Luis Alen belted an RBI double and Sadler scored after a RF Donnie Webb sacrifice fly. Sadler and Alen each had two-hit games. For Sioux Falls, leadoff hitter CF Drew Muren had a team-high two hits including a solo homerun.
The Goldeyes used six pitchers in the game but it was starter Matthew Jackson who earned the win after he threw six innings and allowed just one run. Canaries starter Kyle Ruwe had a strong outing in the loss as he went 7.2 inning and allowed three runs on just eight hits while striking out five and issuing no free passes.
Trois-Rivieres 3, Grand Prairie 1
The back end of the Trois-Rivieres batting order powered the Aigles to a 3-1 win in an interleague contest with the Grand Prairie Airhogs.
The five through nine hitters in the Aigles lineup combined for eight of the team’s 11 hits and two of the three RBI. RF Carlos Guzman was 2-for-4 with a run scored and right behind him in the order, Elvin Millan Jr. went 3-for-4. 2B Pier-Olivier Dostaler also had two hits in the game and he added two RBI including the one in the fifth inning that gave the Aigles the lead for good.
For the AirHogs, DH Jason Botts lead the way at the plate as he had three hits, two of them doubles, and the team’s lone RBI. Aigles starting pitcher Matthew Rusch earned the win for working 6.2 innings and allowing the one run on five hits while striking out five batters.
