District VI Council Member Charlie San Miguel was joined by City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas, the City of Laredo, Martinez Paving, Sherfey Engineering and the cheerleaders, choir and National Honor Society of Borchers Elementary School for the celebration of the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Backwoods Drive Extension, which now reaches Shiloh Drive and will help alleviate congestion and flooding in the area.

“I am very excited and happy that this project is finally completed, improving safety and mobility for the residents who live in this area, for the children who go this school,” said Cm. San Miguel.

The Laredo City Council is committed to improve the quality of life for the citizens by improving the needed infrastructure around the city.  One much needed road was the extension of Backwoods Drive to reduce the traffic congestion in north Laredo and provide better circulation for Borchers Elementary School.

The project started with the acquisition of rights-of-way( ROW) as part of Backwoods drainage improvement project in 2008. Part of the ROW was donated by Mr. Danny Lopez and TAXCO development.  In 2010, City purchased additional ROW and hired Sherfey Engineering Company to design the roadway.    In 2011, City had completed the Backwoods drainage and detention pond construction.

The Backwoods Drive Extension Project consisted of the construction of 1,800 linear feet of a 49 feet back-to-back concrete roadway from south of Borchers Elementary School to Shiloh Drive. The project included rough grading, sub-grade preparation and concrete road and sidewalks and a temporary signal light at Shiloh intersection. The project also included drainage improvements, as well as water lines and sewer lines for the length of the project. The project construction cost is approximately $1.5 million.  This project is funded by 2007-Drainage Certificate of Obligation Bonds and 2010 Utility Sewer System Revenue Bonds.
