On February 7, 2014, Kazen elementary school students and staff transformed their campus into “Kazenopolis”. The imaginary city, also referred to as a minitropolis, gave Kazen students an opportunity to elect their own governing body as well as a chance to operate their own IBC Bank, H.E.B., post office, recycling center, radio station,visitors center, farmers market, utilities company and food bank. IBC President and CEO Dennis Nixon Laredo was joined by Mayor Raul Salinas, Javier Moctezuma, Chairman of the Board for the Laredo Chamber of Commerce and Border Patrol Agent Berin for a ribbon cutting ceremony inside the school library.
Kazen Principal Maria H. Arambula thanked sponsors IBC. H.E.B. The City of Laredo and the Border Patrol. “Their support and involvement helps our students build on their academic and social skills” said Arambula. Cynthia Rodriguez, Executive Director of Elementary Education at UISD , said that the Kazenopolis project is designed to challenge students and enhance what they learn in the classroom. “Events like these bring relevance to what students are learning by helping them understand the importance of reading, writing, mathematics and organization.” said Rodriguez.
