(Laredo, Tx)-Relax and unwind as the soothing sounds of classical melodies by the Laredo Phil take over Laredo Community College (LCC) for the “Friday Night Lites” cocktail concert Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Fine Arts Center Theater at the LCC Fort McIntosh Campus.
General admission to the concert is $10. Admission is free with a valid student ID. Tickets will be sold at the door. The concert features a presentation by the Minor Fourth Trombone Quartet and a special performance of Danzón No. 2 by Mexican composer Arturo Marquez.
Laredo Phil music director Brendan Townsend said the concert is a perfect way to start the weekend.
“The goal of the concert is to have the audience relax after a long work week by enjoying the sweet melodies of this short three-part presentation. It’s going to be a fun evening,” Townsend said.
Opening the concert will be Overture by Minneapolis composer Barbara Holm.
First performed by the Saint Paul Civic Symphony, the piece features three musical sections made up of varying harmonic structures with Biblical undertones. Holm is scheduled to be in attendance for the performance. The presentation will continue with a Concertino for four trombones and strings, composed by John Koetsier and performed by the Minor Forth Trombone Quartet.
“It is a very lively and upbeat piece. This particular composition is almost like a jig. It’s very jazzy,” Townsend added.
The Quartet features the talents of Laredoan Rai Morales and long-time LPO members Martin McCain and Oscar Díaz.
With the assistance of fellow University of Texas Longhorn graduate Javier Stuppard, the group has performed across the United States and Europe, garnering growing recognition.
The concert will conclude with a special presentation of Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Marquez, as performed by the Laredo Phil.
“The piece is extremely popular all over the world,” said Townsend. “Besides the Mexican national anthem, Danzón No. 2 is probably the most popular orchestral piece by a Mexican composer. We are excited to feature it as part of our ongoing shared borders theme.”
