(Laredo, Tx)-The state of Texas has reported 2,160 Pertussis cases the most in 50 years. In Laredo we have reported 17 confirmed or epi-linked, the most in recent years. Therefore, we want to remind the public on the following:
· Urge all providers to consider as part of the differential diagnosis for patients (young and old) when they have prolonged coughing especially paroxysm coughing, a whoop, or post-tussive gagging/vomiting (infants may present with apnea and/or cyanosis during episodes of coughing), even if fully vaccinated
· Parents if you have children with a chronic cough call you doctor
· Providers, Daycares and Schools; report immediately any probable case
· Parents, Daycares and Schools make sure all children and students are appropriately vaccinated.
· All pregnant women must be vaccinated.
· Persons who are immune-compromised must also be vaccinated.
· Healthcare workers should be updated with their Tdap.
· Take preventive measures: hygiene, wash hands, cough into your elbow, use disposable tissues.
