Fargo-Moorhead 11, Amarillo 7
A red-hot start helped the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks clinch the American Association’s North Division with an 11-7 win against Amarillo.
The first six batters to step to the plate in the bottom of the first all reached base, and the RedHawks put together a five-run inning. Fargo-Moorhead scored runs on RBI singles from 1B Keith Brachold and DH Tim Alberts, a wild pitch, a passed ball and an error by Amarillo 1B Kyle Nichols.
The RedHawks kept at it in the second, leading off with a solo home run from 3B Ronnie Bourquin. Later in the second, Alberts doubled home Brachold to make it 7-1.
Amarillo scored four runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single by SS KC Serna and a two-RBI single by CF Chris Valencia, cutting the RedHawks’ lead to 7-5, but a four-run Fargo-Moorhead seventh ended Amarillo’s chances.
It was Brachold and Alberts again in the seventh, with Brachold singling home two runs, and then Alberts blasting a two-run homer. Alberts led the RedHawks with four RBI, while Brachold, Alberts and Bourquin all had three hits.
Kansas City 3, Gary SouthShore 2 (11 innings)
LF Justin Bass led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off home run to give Kansas City a 3-2 win. Bass, the T-Bones’ leadoff hitter, batted 3-for-6 and also scored the team’s first run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly.
Left-handed starter Rick Zagone pitched masterfully for the T-Bones in a no-decision, allowing zero earned runs in 8 2/3 innings. The RailCats scored their only two runs in an error-extended first inning.
In the third, 3B Brandon Jones tied the game with an RBI single, and the game stayed tied for nearly eight innings before Bass’ heroics.
Relief pitcher Jose Jimenez (1-1) earned the win after pitching a 1-2-3 11th inning.
St. Paul 11, Winnipeg 4
Two big innings early helped the Saints cruise past Winnipeg, 11-4. A three-run homer in the first inning for St. Paul 1B Brian Burgamy set the tone, and the Saints followed up with four more runs in the second.
In that inning, 2B Adam Frost was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, DH Brandon Tripp singled in two runs and 3B Joey Becker grounded out to score a run.
With a 7-0 lead in the second inning, right-hander Anthony Claggett (9-5) got the job done, allowing just two runs in six innings.
The Saints scored three runs in the eighth to run away with the game.
Goldeyes’ RF Fehlandt Lentini batted 3-for-5 with two RBI and a home run in the losss.
Wichita 8, Lincoln 4
Saltdogs’ 1B Ian Gac homered twice, but Lincoln still fell to the Wingnuts, 8-4.
Wichita jumped out to a quick lead with a three-run second, which was kickstarted by CF Brent Clevlen’s leadoff home run. Several at-bats later, SS Ryan Koury knocked a two-RBI double.
The Wingnuts added to their lead in the fifth, when 1B CJ Ziegler hit a solo home run, and C Cole Armstrong singled in two more runs to make it 6-0.
Wichita added another solo homer in the sixth, this time from 2B Jake Kahaulelio, to give the Wingnuts a seven-run lead.
Gac homered in the sixth and eighth to no avail, and Wichita lefty starter Anthony Capra (7-2) reeled in a win after allowing two runs in six innings.
Grand Prairie 6, El Paso 4
A four-run fifth inning jettisoned the AirHogs past El Paso, 6-4.
Right-hander Derek Blacksher (10-7) allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings. He struck out two and walked one before giving way to the bullpen. Closer Patrick Mincey came in for a four-out save in the ninth — his 21st of the season.
El Paso took a 2-0 lead in the game’s opening frame on back to back extra-base hits from LF Oscar Mesa and RF Welington Dotel.
Grand Prairie got one run back in the bottom of the second before a breakout fifth inning gave the AirHogs the lead.
With two outs in the fifth, 1B Andres Rodriguez took an 0-2 count and forced it full, and then smacked an RBI single to tie the game. Rodriguez’s strong at-bat extended the inning for DH Palmer Karr who proceeded to crush a three-run homer, providing all the run support Blacksher needed.
The New Jersey Jackals earned the Can-Am League’s second and final playoff berth in dominating fashion, beating the Laredo Lemurs of the American Association, 11-3.
After falling behind 2-1, 2B Jose Cuevas tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double, and came around to score the go-ahead run on CF Chris Curran’s RBI single.
The Jackals scored two more in the fifth on a two-out, two-RBI single from Cuevas, and added four more in the sixth to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Cuevas finished 3-for-4 with a team-high four RBI.
Jackals’ RHP Brandon Moore (4-3) earned the playoff-clinching win, tossing six innings of three-run ball while striking out six.
New Jersey LF Chris Duffy and RF Bryan Sabatella both had multi-hit games with two RBI each.
Sioux City 6, Sioux Falls 2
DH Sam Judah’s two-RBI double in the fourth proved the difference in a 6-2 Sioux City win.
Trailing 1-0, the Explorers put together a three-run fourth with Judah’s double and an RBI single from 2B Anthony Kaskadden.
Kaskadden found success at the plate all day, batting 4-for-5 with two RBI, including an eighth inning RBI single.
RF Peter Barrows and SS Leugim Barroso also contributed with solo home runs in the fifth and seventh, respectively.
RHP Cody Hall (1-1) earned the win with 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball. He surrendered just five hits and struck out one.
