Professional Career Prep Summer Program

  Laredo, Texas – The Board of Directors of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) announces the start of a two-week advanced health career program for high school graduates and college students interested in pursuing an advanced health career.  This program is collaboration between the AHEC, TAMIU and the UT Health Science Center Regional Campus in Laredo.  It is the first of its kind in the community and is designed specifically to prepare students seeking an advanced health career. 

 The program is scheduled to start Monday, July 15, and will end on Friday, July 26,, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UT Health Science Center Regional Campus in Laredo, 1937 E. Bustamante St.. The camp is sponsored by the UT Health Science Center Regional Campus in Laredo and it is made available at no cost to students.

 stethoscopeThe goal of this two-week program is to prepare students to qualify for admissions into an advanced health career program.  The program will offer an intense review of basic science, anatomy, physiology, biology and more to help students improve their performance in school admission tests and academic performance.  In addition, students will also receive training in social skills and interview skills to help them enhance their ability to communicate and perform in a professional manner during a business/educational interview.  Educators, counselors and other professionals with a wealth of knowledge in higher education and social skill development will present the sessions.  The program will also offer information about access to the various scholarship opportunities and financial aid programs in the various fields.

 “This is a great opportunity for our youth, and this program is certainly a true collaboration between AHEC and the UT Health Science Center Laredo Regional Campus to benefit the entire community and ultimately our future health care professionals,” remarked Judge Mercurio Martinez, Jr., chairman of the Area Health Education Center. 

 The University of Texas Health Science Center Regional Campus in Laredo is focused on engaging local students into careers within the health professions.  Starting with the Mid Rio Grande Border Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in 1993 and followed by the establishment of the campus in 2002, numerous educational programs in science education, research and health care have been initiated.   The campus offers training opportunities in health careers through local instruction, community-based research and distance education technology. The goal is to increase the number of qualified health care professionals in the region.
