American Association Game Recaps: Tuesday July 30th

bCourtesy Poinstreak Technologies,

Sioux Falls 6, Trois-Rivieres 5

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Sioux Falls turned the tables on the Aigles, winning 6-5 on C Kevin Dulitz’s walk-off RBI single to left field.

The lead went back and forth through the early part of the game with Sioux Falls taking a 4-2 lead in the fifth on DH Tim Pahuta’s two-RBI double. The Aigles responded in the top of the sixth, though, when RF Jeremy Nowak hit a two-out, two-RBI triple to tie the game at four.

In the top of the ninth, Trois-Rivieres drew two walks to get a runner into scoring position, but SS David JL Cooper was thrown out at the plate by Canaries’ CF Nick Van Stratten to keep the score tied. DH In the next at-bat, David Miller was granted an intentional pass to load the bases. 3B Cam Kneeland was up next and he drew a four-pitch walk — the Aigles fourth walk of the inning — to score CF Steve Brown, giving Trois-Rivieres a 5-4 lead.

The Canaries didn’t back down, though, and after LF JP Ramirez scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at five, Dulitz came through with a hit to end it.

RHP Chris Allen (1-0) came away with the win after he struck out the first batter he faced to end the Aigles’ ninth-inning rally.

Laredo 10, Kansas City 4 (Game 1 – 7 innings)

Laredo jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and then cemented that lead with a six-run sixth inning, taking the first game of a doubleheader from the T-Bones, 10-4. Laredo RF Mike Sheridan put the exclamation point on Laredo’s win with his first home run of the season — a sixth-inning grand slam.

Lemurs’ 3B John Allen went 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI singles in the first and sixth inning and a run scored. Lemurs’ CF Daniel Poma wreaked havoc on the basepaths, stealing three bases and scoring two runs, including one on a wild pitch, in addition to his two hits.

Laredo southpaw Greg Wilborn (4-1) went the distance, allowing four earned runs on eight hits through seven innings. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter.

Kansas City 1B Jairo Perez had two doubles and three RBI in the loss.

Kansas City 9, Laredo 7 (Game 2 – 7 innings)

T-Bones’ 1B Matt Padgett saved the T-Bones from being swept in Tuesday’s doubleheader with a single swing, blasting a three-run home run to beat Laredo, 9-7. Kansas City trailed 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh before burning the Lemurs for four runs. 3B Anthony Davis led off the inning with a walk and CF Kennard Jones reached on an error to set the table. 2B Jairo Perez singled in Davis to get the T-Bones within one and Padgett did the rest. Kansas City didn’t make an out in its final inning at the plate.

Padgett finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Perez went 2-for-4, including a first-inning solo homer, with two runs scored and two RBI.

Laredo LF Harrison Kain led off the game with a home run. The Lemurs scored two runs in the first and three in the second to grab a 5-3 lead. The Lemurs made it 6-3 in the fifth when 3B John Allen hit a solo homer, but Padgett inched the T-Bones closer with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, making it 7-5.

RHP Chad Robinson (1-3) picked up the win after allowing one run in the top of the seventh.

Winnipeg 8, Lincoln 0 (Game 1 – 7 innings)

Goldeyes’ left-hander Edgar Osuna (3-1) held the Saltdogs to just three hits in seven innings, and Osuna’s offense backed him up for an 8-0 Winnipeg win. Osuna kept Lincoln scoreless, struck out eight and walked one.

The Goldeyes jacked three home runs —one each by DH Ray Sadler, 1B Casey Haerthter and SS Josh Mazzola — doing most of their damage with four runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth. Sadler went 4-for-4 and added a double, two RBI and two runs scored to his fourth-inning solo homer. Mazzola was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run as well.

CF Tyler Graham and 2B Kevin Moesquit each drove in a run with an RBI single.

Winnipeg 12, Lincoln 2 (Game 2 – 7 innings)

Winnipeg completed the sweep of the doubleheader with another dominating performance — this time a 12-2 win, which featured a nine-run fifth inning for the Goldeyes.

The first five batters registered hits in that inning and the Goldeyes eventually brought 15 men to the plate in the inning. Four Goldeyes’ batters had multiple hits in the inning and RF Ray Sadler had two separate run-scoring hits — one a double to left field and the other a single to right field.

C Luis Alen and 2B Kevin Moesquit had back-to-back home runs in the inning. Alen hit a three-run bomb and Moesquit followed with a solo homer of his own.

3B Amos Ramon led the Goldeyes with four hits in the game. He also scored three runs and had two RBI.

Winnipeg RHP Matthew Jackson (1-0) got the W after pitching 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball and striking out eight.

Amarillo 5, Grand Prairie 1

Five Amarillo pitchers combined to limit the AirHogs to one run, despite allowing seven hits and six walks, in a 5-1 win. Amarillo’s pitching staff stranded ten base runners. RHP Brad Wilson (3-1) got the win after pitching six scoreless innings of three-hit ball. He struck out two and walked three.

The Sox broke through offensively with a three-run third inning. Amarillo 2B Jermel Lomack delivered an RBI single to left field and RF Chris Valencia and 1B Jorge Delgado each drove in a run with a groundout. The Sox added two more runs in the sixth when DH Cory Patton and 3B Brandon Jones each drove in a run on an RBI single.

The AirHogs scored their lone run in the eighth when 2B Ryan Pineda plated a run with an RBI single.

St. Paul 11, Fargo-Moorhead 1

The Saints poured on the offense in the middle innings and beat Fargo-Moorhead, 11-1. The Saints stranded the bases loaded in the first inning, but they would get things started in the bottom of the third, when RF Brandon Tripp doubled in a run, 1B Ole Sheldon hit an RBI single and CF Jose Hernandez doubled home Sheldon.

The Saints pulled away in the fourth with a five-run outburst. DH Brad Boyer led off the scoring with an RBI single to right field, and then Tripp scored two more on another single to right. Sheldon made it an 8-0 with a two-run home run.

The Saints added two more in the fifth on LF Willie Cabrera’s two-RBI double, making the score 10-1.

St. Paul RHP Mark Hamburger (5-4) coasted to his fifth win, allowing one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Sioux City 5, Gary SouthShore 4

RF Peter Barrows doubled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh, setting up Sioux City for a 5-4 win. The RailCats brought the winning run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but RHP Jimmer Kennedy induced a fly out to center field to end the threat and complete a two-inning save — his first of the season. Explorers’ starter Richard Salazar (6-3) pitched seven innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out four in the win.

C Alberto Espinosa gave the X’s a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI double, but the RailCats tied the game in the seventh with C Mark Babineau’s solo home run and 3B Brian Kolb’s RBI single. Barrows, who went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI would break the tie in the bottom frame.

El Paso 10, Wichita 5

El Paso gave RHP Jesse Estrada plenty of breathing room in his first start, breaking out for seven runs in the first inning. The Diablos scored two runs on an error, two on C Sergio Burruel’s RBI single and three on SS Maikol Gonzalez’s bases-clearing double.

Gonzalez and RF Oscar Mesa got on base plenty at the top of El Paso’s lineup, combining for five hits and three runs scored.

Wichita battled back and brought the score to 7-5 in the fifth when CF Brent Clevlen hit a solo home run, but the Diablos tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.

On the mound, Estrada (1-0) got the win in his first start. He allowed five earned runs in five innings, struck out three and walked two.
