Lemurs Sweep the Canaries

Courtesy Shawn Tiemann,

Laredo, TX – A big night at the plate for the Lemur short stop and a strong debut on the mound for a newly acquired right hander lead to a 5-3 win over Sioux Falls at Uni-Trade Stadium.

lemursLemur starter Fernando Hernandez retired the first ten batters he faced and left the game with a 2-1 lead after six innings.  The first two runs for Laredo came on solo home runs from short stop Jimmy Mojica with one out in both the third and fifth innings.  Sioux Falls later tied the game at two in the top of the seventh.

Laredo would retake the lead with a three-run bottom of the seventh that began with second baseman Harrison Kain smashing a double into the left field corner.  The next batter, third baseman Garrett Rau, singled home Kain on a sharply hit ball to center.  Mojica then collected his fourth hit of the night on a single to left that scored Rau from second.  A one-out single from center fielder Sawyer Carroll plated Mojica to finish off the scoring in the seventh.  Sioux Falls added a run in the eighth on a two-out solo home run by Tim Pahuta.  Laredo closer Mike Benacka then pitched a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.

Lemur starter Fernando Hernandez received a no decision as he worked six innings and allowed one run on just two base hits.  He struck out four with four walks in his first start of the season.  Mark Haynes posted the win in relief.  Haynes (3-0) pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts.  Sioux Falls starter Kyle Ruwe took the loss.  Ruwe (3-4) pitched into the seventh and gave up five runs (all earned) on ten hits with one strikeout.  Lemur short stop Jimmy Mojica finished 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, a double, and a single.  Mojica drove in three of the five runs to help finish off a three-game sweep of the Canaries.  With the defeat, Sioux Falls (12-21) has lost a season-high six games.

The first-place Lemurs (21-12) went 6-1 on the home stand.  Laredo starts a new road series at Kansas City against the T-Bones Friday night.  First pitch is set for 7:05.  For more information, visit www.laredolemurs.com.
