Wichita 7, St. Paul 2 (Game 1 – 7 innings)

The Wingnuts defeated the Saints 7-2 after overcoming St. Paul’s early lead with an explosive third inning in game one of the doubleheader. A two-run home run from RF Brandon Tripp gave the Saints a lead in the second. But Wichita’s six runs in the third inning, including a two-run homer from DH John Rodriguez and a home run from 1B CJ Ziegler, were too much for St. Paul to bounce back from.

LHP Ryan Hinson earned his fourth straight win for the Wingnuts, pitching all seven innings and striking out eight batters.

St. Paul 3, Wichita 2 (Game 2 – 7 innings)

St. Paul’s three-run sixth inning gave them the late lead they needed in order to defeat Wichita 3-2 in their second game of the night, splitting the doubleheader. Wingnuts LHP Anthony Capra and RHP Daniel Bennett combined to pitch five innings, holding the Saints to zero runs and just three hits. Following a pitching change, St. Paul LF Willie Cabrera evened the score in the sixth and SS Adam Frost hit a two-RBI double to break the tie.

Gary SouthShore 6, Fargo-Moorhead 4

Gary SouthShore struck first in this one and tallied enough runs to survive a late rally from the RedHawks, defeating them 6-4. The RailCats loaded the bases in the fourth and SS Zac Mitchell’s two-RBI single established a lead which C Craig Maddox then built onto with a home run in the fifth. The RedHawks trimmed the lead to just one after a three-run seventh inning. But Gary SouthShore’s pair of runs in the eighth kept their lead alive. CF Nic Jackon’s home run in the bottom of the eighth for the RedHawks was not quite enough to spark a comeback.

RailCats LHP Clay Zavada earned his second save of the season after holding the RedHawks scoreless in the ninth.

Kansas City 6, Lincoln 1

T-Bones RHP Lucas Irvine starred in Kansas City’s 6-1 win over Lincoln, pitching all nine innings and throwing a no-hitter through the first six innings. He earned his first win of the season with six strikeouts, one earned run, and just three hits against him.

Kansas City capitalized on Irvine’s pitching prowess and scored all six of its runs during Lincoln’s hitless spell. 2B Jairo Perez got involved with a two-run home run in the fifth, quickly followed by a home run from 1B Matt Padgett. Perez and Padgett are now first and second in the league’s RBI leaderboards, respectively.

Amarillo 9, Sioux Falls 7

The Sox outscored the Canaries 9-7 in a matchup that became a battle of high-powered offenses. The top of Amarillo’s lineup proved to be the difference, combining for six RBIs in the first two innings. CF Jason Martin was 2-for-4 with two runs, RF Chris Valencia had two runs and three RBIs– including one from a triple in the first, and C Chris Grossman went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs of his own.

Despite the Sox reaching a 7-1 lead by the end of the fifth, Sioux Falls was able to stay in the game and cut Amarillo’s lead to just two in the ninth, where their rally stopped short. Canaries LF JP Ramirez played a big part in his own team’s near-comeback, collecting four RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance.

Sioux City 11, Grand Prairie 2

The X’s routed the AirHogs 11-2 after producing a deadly seven-run inning in the third and keeping Grand Prairie scoreless through seven innings. RHP Jason Jarvis was partly responsible for Grand Prairie’s scoring drought, remaining on the mound for just over six innings of it and never allowing more than two hits in a single inning.

Though there were no home runs in the game, CF Eliezer Mesa, DH Luke Murton, and SS Leugim Barroso each tallied two runs and two RBIs to lead the X’s to their victory.

A two-RBI triple from AirHogs 3B Frazier Hall in the eighth was enough to keep Sioux City from earning a shutout.

Winnipeg 6, Quebec 0

The Goldeyes shut out the Capitales 6-0 in this inter-league matchup behind Winnipeg’s near-flawless pitching duo of RHP Justin Garcia and LHP Brendan Lafferty, both of whom allowed just one hit each. Lafferty continues his streak without a run against him through his 15.1 innings pitched this season.

The Goldeyes also impressed at bat, where three different hitters hit home runs. In addition to his two-run home run, LF Fehlandt Lentini was 2-for-3 on the night with two total runs. CF Tyler Graham and 3B Amos Ramon were the other two Goldeyes with homers.

Laredo 4, El Paso 3

The Lemurs defeated El Paso 4-3 after the early pitching heroics of LHP Fabian Williamson held the Diablos to just one hit in five innings. Williamson also had seven strikeouts, earning his second straight win and second straight game without allowing a run.

Diablos LHP Kevin Brahney did his best to keep up and had a solid outing of his own, allowing just three hits and two runs in his six innings. The pitching duel kept the game close and an RBI double from El Paso 3B Omar Luna tied things up in the eighth. CF Sawyer Carroll hit a double of his own for the Lemurs later in the same inning, collecting two RBIs and regaining the lead for Laredo.

El Paso’s batters started out strong in the top of the ninth, loading the bases and scoring after SS Maikol Gonzalez was walked. However, the Diablos came up short, ending the game with the bases still loaded.
