LISD RECRUITING MAGNET AND EARLY COLLEGE STUDENTS

Laredo, Tx- Laredo Independent School District will be hosting a recruitment night for all area eighth grade students and their parents on Wednesday, March 6, at the Laredo Civic Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The event is aimed at recruiting students who may be interested in attending one of LISD’s three magnets school or the Early College High School located at Texas A&M International University.

 Counselors, administrators, and current students from Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts, Dr. Dennis D. Cantu Health Science Magnet School, and Sabas Perez School of Engineering and Technology Application and Laredo Early College High School, will be on hand to answer any questions students might have concerning the admissions and application process.

 The recruitment night will give middle school students the opportunity to consider their academic futures. LISD wants to provide students every opportunity to gain the skills needed for today’s workforce and to pursue a higher education in the field of their choice.

 Students interested in pursuing a career in Communication and Fine Arts, may benefit from attending The VMT Magnet School. VMT students have an opportunity for a comprehensive course of study with an emphasis on creative development and artistic performance in area such as: communications, dance, music, theater arts, and visual arts. The school will also provide a rigorous academic instructional program that complements and supports all visual and performing arts. The Trevino Magnet School is under the leadership of Dr. Martha Villarreal. The school is currently located in historic downtown Laredo. A new campus will be constructed across the street from Nixon High School.

 The Dr. Dennis D. Cantu Magnet School provides students an opportunity to explore careers in the medical field, and gain hands-on experience in areas such as nursing, EMT, pharmacy technology, and medical coding and billing. Students engage in a very interactive and rigorous academic program that includes dual enrollment. Students graduate with up to 21 college hours and certification programs allowing them to work either full-time or part-time while they are pursuing advanced degrees and certifications in the medical field. The Cantu Magnet School is located at Martin High School and is under the direction of Gerri Arredondo.
