Gateway City Book Lovers Club To Meet For One Last Time in 2008

Laredo Public Library continues to promote literacy with thought-provoking, emotional read

By:  Xochitl Mora

Tuesday, October 21, 2008—After the success of One City, One Book, the Laredo Public Library hopes that there are now a lot more book worms in town; book worms who are willing to share their thoughts and ideas about the books they read.  In fact, the Library is home to the Gateway City Book Lovers’ Club, a small, but enthusiastic group of library patrons who enjoy reading, book discussions and of course, a happy camaraderie with their fellow book lovers.  The Gateway City Book Lovers’ Club enjoys sharing a variety of authors and books in an open discussion format.

Their next book promises to be just as powerful and enjoyable as the One City, One Book selection.  The book selected is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, with Jeffrey Zaslow.  Based on the extraordinary final lecture by Carnegie Mellon University professor Pausch, given after he discovered he had pancreatic cancer, this moving book goes beyond the now-famous lecture to inspire readers to live each day with purpose and joy.  (See review attached.)

All Book Club books are available from the Reference Desk at the Laredo Public Library and also at B. Dalton Bookseller with a 25% Best Sellers discount.

The Gateway City Book Lovers’ Club will meet on Wednesday, November 20, 2008 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. to discuss the book.  The sessions are informal, allowing everyone a chance to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and reactions to the questions posed by the discussion leader.

QUOTE FROM PAM

This will be the last meeting of the Book Club for this year.  The club will not meet in December, and will resume their monthly discussions again in the new year, meeting on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

All meetings are in the HEB Multi-Purpose Room. For more information about the club, please contact Pam Burrell at (956) 795-2400 ext. 2268.

“I want to see the Laredo Public Library pack the HEB Multi-Purpose room not just once a year, but every month, with people discussing the Gateway City Book Lovers’ Club Book of the Month,” said Pam Burrell, Adult Services Outreach Coordinator the Library.  “I want to see the people of this community challenge those who say that Laredo is not a community that reads.”

“I encourage everyone to be role models for their children, family and friends.  Come each month to have fun and experience the camaraderie that only comes when sharing a good book.  Lets prove to this community and to the state of Texas that literacy is alive and well in Laredo.  A book a month – it’s a good thing,” she concluded.
