Congressman Henry Cuellar Announces Service Academy Day

Washington, DC- Congressman Henry Cuellar announced today that Service Academy Day will be held Sunday, March 1, in San Antonio. The event will take place at the University of Texas at San Antonio Campus, located at One UTSA Circle Main Building, Ground Floor, 0.0104.

The purpose of Service Academy Day is for students who are interested in being accepted into military academies to learn more about the academies and become familiar with the nominations process. Representatives from the West Point Academy ( Army), Air Force Academy, Naval Academy , Merchant Marine Academy , and Coast Guard Academy will be available to answer questions from students or parents.

These institutions prepare college-age Americans to be commissioned as officers in the active or rese rve components of the United States a rmed services for a minim um of 5 years upon graduation.

Nominations are made on a strictly compet itive basis, and as a result, Congressman Cuellar has established an Academy Nomination s Selection Committee that determine s nominations based solely on the candidate's qualifications. Candidates are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership performance, athletic participation, community service, and motivation.

“Attending any one of the United States Service Academies and then graduating as an officer in one of our armed service branches is one of the most admirable achievements a student can attain,” said Congressman Cuellar. “The United States demands a great commitment from its servicemen and – women , and it is encouraging to know so many remarkable young people are eager to serve their country. ”
