Senator Ted Kennedy Dies of Brain Cancer

Senator Ted Kennedy has died of Brain Cancer at the age of 77.   Senator Kennedy died at his home in Hyannisport, Massachusetts.  Senator Kennedy had served as Senator of Massachusetts for 43 years.  Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in 2008.  (View Pics of Senator Kennedy’s visit to Laredo in 2008)

40 years on, Abbey Road is still Electric Avenue

(Associated Press) LONDON – Hundreds of Beatles fans swarmed Abbey Road on Saturday, singing songs and snarling traffic to mark 40 years since John, Paul, George and Ringo strode across the leafy north London street and into the history books on iconic pop photos.
The famous photo graced the cover of the Fab Four’s “Abbey Road,” the last album recorded together, and shows the bandmates walking purposefully across the zebra-striped asphalt.

Human Rights Activists Protest Immigrant Prisons

     Local pro-immigrant groups will convene at the CCA facility located near Saunders and Loop 20. The demonstration will take place on August 1, 2009 at 10:00 a.m and includes a march from the HEB parking lot on Saunders to the immigrant detention center.  The protest is against the nationwide detention of immigrants that has been steadily occurring in the last few years.  This group of people hopes to bring awareness to a national dilemma that is taking place on a day to day basis in our community.

Former CBS anchor ‘Uncle Walter’ Cronkite dead at 92

(CNN) — Walter Cronkite, the CBS anchorman known as “Uncle Walter” for his easygoing, measured delivery and “the most trusted man in America” for his rectitude and gravitas, has died, CBS reported Friday
Cronkite was 92.

Jackson’s body on way to Staples center

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) – Michael Jackson’s body is on its way to the memorial service at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, sources involved in the planning said.
Jackson’s family and closest friends attended a gathering at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills on Tuesday morning before going to the public memorial.
Jackson’s family and friends were at the chapel, which can hold about 1,000 people. Shortly thereafter seven suited men wheeled out a golden casket covered in red flowers from Forest Lawn’s Hall of Liberty.

NEW LEGISLATION CREATES 175,000 NEW VOLUNTEER SERVICE POSITIONS NATIONWIDE, ELIMINATES COST-SHARING FOR COLONIAS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The President today signed into law the Edward Kennedy Serve America Act, H.R. 1388, a major reauthorization and expansion of national volunteer programs.  The law launches a new era of volunteerism by increasing the number of volunteers in federal service programs from 75,000 to 250,000, and it establishes new volunteer opportunities for students, retirees, and veterans.

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) was recently named the 2009 Government Recycling Program of the Year by the Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA).
The CMRA Board of Directors presented the award to TxDOT during its 2009 annual meeting held April 6 in Tampa, Florida. Each year, CMRA recognizes organizations in four categories for excellence in recycling construction and demolition (C&D) material.
