OPERATION LONE STAR 2010 a SUCCESS!

LAREDO, TX— Considered one of the largest humanitarian missions, Operation Lone Star (OLS) finalized its 12th annual effort today with great success. OLS offered free health services to persons in Laredo and Webb County this week (August 2-6, 2010) at Alexander High School.  OLS is a collaborative project uniting state health and human services agencies, the Joint Texas Military Forces, City of Laredo, the Laredo Health Department, local services groups, schools and civilian volunteers to provide the largest public health humanitarian effort in the country.

RABIES VACCINATION CLINIC WEDNESDAY NIGHT

City of Laredo to Receive, Distribute Donated Items

 (Laredo, TX – July 14, 2010 – 3 PM)  In the aftermath of the swollen Rio Grande which inundated homes and some businesses along the riverbank, Laredo citizens, churches, corporations and other organizations have each taken the lead in organizing collection drives to help the victims of the flood.  To help provide a way to organize and distribute those items collected, the City of Laredo has a warehouse that will be accepting items donated in these differing collection drives, as well as receiving any items people wish to …

 (Laredo, TX  7:15 p.m.)  The City of Laredo Emergency Operation Center wants to reiterate to any displaced citizens or individuals in the community that the Laredo Civic Center, located at 2400 San Bernardo, is still open and operational as a shelter for anyone needing shelter.  The shelter will be open for 24 hours, so individuals seeking shelter are encouraged to stop by the Civic Center.
 All other residents who had been previously been evacuated may return to their homes if there is no more water inside their homes.

Laredo,TX- The Laredo Health Department wants to remind the public to practice good water safety and disease prevention as we prepare for the cresting of the Rio Grande.
Public Health Tips during Cresting of the Rio Grande:

Listen for public safety and the latest emergency information.
Stay away from areas close to the river bank until advised.
Be prepared to evacuate if you are in low flood plain areas as advised by emergency operations.
Always obey all public safety and traffic precautions and signs (do not cross safety barriers).

 (Laredo, TX  4:10 p.m.)  The City of Laredo is stressing once again that its municipal drinking water is good, clean and has not been affected by rising flood waters from the Rio Grande.   Additionally, water service has not been interrupted.
 The WASTEWATER Treatment has been flooded; HOWEVER, this has not affected the water treatment plant.

MANDATORY EVACUATION

Transportation Services for Affected Areas
(Laredo, TX  9:50 a.m.)  Mandatory evacuation has been ordered for people who live in the affected flooded areas of Allen Street, Chacon Creek, Los Martinez and Quail Creek.  These areas are seeing flood waters rising and must leave the area immediately to higher ground or to the Laredo Civic Center shelter.  Reverse 9-1-1 calls are being made to residents in the affected area, informing them of this information.
