LISD’s Department of Financial Management receives national budget award

For the fourth year in a row the Laredo Independent School District has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.  This recognition is given by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada.

VMT Magnet students win Texas Energy “Light Up the Red Carpet” Student Film Contest

Trevino Magnet School students, Abe Gonzalez and Felix Lopez  submitted a video for the Dallas Film Society Festival last  weekend. They were named the Grand Prize Winners. As Grand  Prize Winners of the TXU Energy Film Festival. VMT will receive $7,500.00 for the school. The money will be used for equipment, software and even for scholarship. One of the students will  receive editing software and they will have the opportunity to shoot a commercial with TXU Energy in Dallas.

Inaugural Toro Legends Induction Ceremony

(Laredo, Tx)-Cigarroa High School, the Pride of South Laredo, will induct 14 members today into their Toro Legends during their inaugural ceremony.   This year’s inductees include; Rafael Garcia, Patricia Albidrez, Raul Nuno, Albert Perez Hernandez, Omar Gonzalez, Jose Cerda, Irma De La Cruz, Osvaldo Villarreal, Victor Alvarado, Angeles Borrego, Rebecca Albidrez-Gamez, Ana Benavides, Jessica Pena Alvarado, and Adalberto Soliz.   The event will take place at the Cigarroa High School Gym.

LISD Honors School Librarians at Luncheon

(Laredo, Tx)-Sixty LISD librarians and librarian assistants were recognized at a proclamation and awards ceremony luncheon in celebration of National Library Week. During the awards luncheon, two LISD educators were selected Librarians of the Year. Irema Trevino of Santo Nino Elementary School and Gloria Saldivar of Christen Middle School Librarian, were presented with the top honors. The event was held at the Leyendecker Elementary School Library earlier this week.

LISD campuses and administrative offices to observe Easter Holiday

 Laredo Independent School District campuses and administrative offices will be closed on Friday, April 5, and Monday, April 9, in observance of the upcoming Easter Holiday.
 The LISD Tax Office will also observe the Easter Holiday and will be closed Friday, April 5, and Monday, April 9.
 All LISD campuses and administrative offices will re-open Tuesday, April 10. Classes for LISD students will resume Tuesday.

Nixon High School student to attend INTEL Science Fair

(Laredo, Tx)- Since winning in her first science fair at Milton Elementary School with her “The Amazing Egg”, Alyssa Benavides has been dreaming of pursuing a career in the medical field. Benavides, now a junior at Nixon High School, is one step closer to her dream as she will compete in the 2012 INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Pittsburg Pennsylvania from May 13-18.

Cigarroa High School students garner state honors

Two Cigarroa High School Automotive Technology students from Cigarroa High School are on the road to success with their mechanical talents.
Ricardo Fructoso and Manuel Guevara received first place and a superior rating, with their individual projects at the Texas Skills USA contest in Corpus Christi.  Fructoso’s winning project dealt with Starting System Components and Guevara’s project was on Charging System Components.  All projects are created using a real automotive engine that is taken apart by the students and later …

Ryan Elementary Diamond Dancers continue tradition of excellence

The M.S. Ryan Elementary School Bobcat Diamond Dance Team is celebrating a continued tradition of excellence.  This year’s dance team competed at the Midwest Cheer and Dance competition winning first place.  The dancers were also named Grand Champion this past weekend at Fiesta Texas in San Antonio.

LISD One Act Plays advance to district competition

The Laredo Independent School District shines the spotlight on Nixon, Cigarroa, and Martin High for sweeping the local UIL One Act Play Competitions.  The young thespians are rehearsing for the next level of the district competition on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the Student Activity Center.  Nixon High will perform at 5:00 p.m., while Cigarroa High takes the stage at 6:00 p.m., and curtain goes up for Martin High at 7:00 p.m.  All three high schools won “Best Actor/Actress” awards …

 The Laredo Independent School District will be hosting Town Hall Meetings on Tuesday, March 20, 2012. The three simultaneous meetings will be held at the Nixon High School Annex cafeteria, Martin High School library, and Cigarroa Middle School library beginning promptly at 6:00 p.m.
