LISD Office of Communications Earn State Honors

 The Laredo Independent School District’s Office of Communications and the Instructional Television (ITV) Departments received several 2009 Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA) Best in Category, Gold, and Silver Star Awards for excellence in school communications. The awards were announced at the TSPRA Star Awards Celebration last week during the association’s annual conference in Austin, Texas.
 Each year, TSPRA recognizes communicators in school districts, education foundations, education associations and organizations for their outstanding contributions in school communications. This year, over1000 entries were received in the annual contest.

 The “Teens in the Driver Seat Organization” of the Vidal M. Treviño School of Communications and Fine Arts announced that the VMT/Teens in the Driver Seat 5K Run has been scheduled for Sunday, March 7, at 7:30 a.m. at Historic St. Peter’s Plaza in downtown Laredo. Registration for all participants is already underway.

Ryan Elementary Celebrates Chinese New Year

Ryan Elementary school celebrated the Chinese New Year 2010 Year of the Tiger.  Today second grade students celebrated the New Year with a Dragon Parade followed by a Chinese meal in their classroom where they sampled different types of Chinese food.
“The students have been provided a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and traditions,” said Sandra Munoz, Ryan Elementary Principal. “Our second grade students have been learning about the Chinese cultural traditions that take place during their Chinese New Year Celebration.”

Laredo Independent School District announced that the district has received the AAA financial rating from Standards & Poor’s Rating Services system for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2009. LISD was awarded the “AAA” enhanced program rating which reflects the strength and liquidity of the Texas Permanent School Fund.

Laredo ISD Schools Back in District 29-5A

 Laredo Independent School District high schools have been realigned and are back together in the same district on the playing field. This morning, the University Interscholastic
League announced the new realignment to form District 29-5A.
 The new 10-team district will include Martin, Nixon, Cigarroa, United, United South, Alexander, LBJ, Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass Winn, and Del Rio High Schools.

 Laredo Independent School District’s Health Services Department recently completed H1N1 vaccine clinics for all its staff and students. LISD hosted 25 H1N1 vaccine clinics and immunized a total of 9,933 individuals vaccinated against H1N1.
 Since November, the LISD Health Services Department has immunized 6,876 students, which represents 27.20% of LISD student population, 548 staff members and 2,509 LISD community members (family and relatives) according to Patricia Keck, LISD Director of Health Services.

 For the second year in a row Martin High School students will be participating in the AT&T/ Junior Achievement Worldwide Job Shadow Initiative. More than 20 students will shadow 10 AT&T employees on Friday, January 29 at AT&T mobile store located at 5704 San Bernardo.
 Building on the program’s success and positive student impact, students will go back to work with AT&T employees as part of the initiative’s second year in Laredo.

 The Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts will be hosting a voter registration drive at all LISD high schools to register students to vote. On Friday January 29, the magnet school will visit Cigarroa High School at 8:15 a.m. and Nixon High at 10:15 a.m.
 The registration drive is a first for the VMT, where faculty and students are planning their Annual “Rock the Vote” event scheduled for Tuesday, February 2 on the campus grounds in downtown Laredo. Both events encourage local youth to learn …

 The Vidal M. Trevino Magnet School will be holding recruitment week for LISD middle school students with eye-catching Mardi Gras style parades at all LISD middle schools.
The VMT recruitment week will kick-off on Monday, January 25, at 12:00 noon at Cigarroa Middle School.
