TAMIU Students Present at Service-Learning Expo

(Laredo, Texas)-Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences students swept the top prizes at the TAMIU Service Learning Expo held earlier this week.
The annual TAMIU Service Learning Expo attracted entries from a total of 250 students who utilized knowledge gained from their classes and research skills to partner with and assist various community-based projects.
Through video and poster demonstrations, Service Learning Expo winners told their project stories on health issues ranging from baby wellness and promotion, hypertension management, providing primary care and promoting safety awareness among the elderly.
The following students won in video and poster presentations:

1st Place Poster: “Meadow Acres Housing Development Community Assessment”
Course: NURS 4522 Community Health Nursing, Rose Saldivar
Students: Mayra Cavazos, Veronica Medina, Yanira Villanueva, Stephanie Sanchez, Americo Gonzalez.

2nd Place Poster: “Medical Missionaries of Divine Mercy: Providing Primary Care”
Course: MFNP 5007 Wellness and Health Promotion, Dr. Julio Lujano
Services to Underserved Members of the Community
Student: Jeannette Johnson.

3rd Place Poster: “Management for Hypertension”
Course: MFNP 5007 Wellness and Health Promotion, Dr. Lujano
Student: Ana L. Cantu.

Student Favorite Poster: “Promoting Safety Awareness Among the Elderly”

Dr. Marcela Uribe, program director for the Service-Learning, said Service-Learning classes provide experience to students by pairing a TAMIU class with a local organization to provide significant service.

“Service-Learning allows students to explore connections between theory and practice, discover various venues for learning and learn about community organizations in the Laredo area,” Dr. Uribe said.
