District 7 Councilman for the City of Laredo George Altgelt Files a Lawsuit against City Secretary

Laredo, Texas — (August 29, 2016) – District 7 Councilman for the City of Laredo George Altgelt filed a lawsuit today regarding the City’s recent decision to disqualify him from the City’s general election.
“A lawsuit was filed today against the City Secretary, Heberto L. Ramirez. Judge David Peoples, Judge for the 4th Administrative Judicial Region (based in San Antonio, Texas) was assigned the case. Judge Peoples called the City of Laredo shortly after the lawsuit was filed and instructed them to hold off on printing of ballots until he has had an opportunity to confer with all attorneys tomorrow”. Said George Altgelt’s attorney Zone Nguyen.
“The City Secretary failed to perform a statutory function – to review an application, within 5 days of receipt, and provide written notice of any deficiencies. The missing information is facially evident on the application.”
“There is an equitable remedy that the court can look at – public records such as voter registration and WebbCAD homestead records that can verify Altgelt’s residence within District 7. Also, Altgelt’s former application for the District 7 position submitted 20 months ago is still on file with the City Secretary’s Office.”
“The City has personal knowledge of Altgelt’s residence in District 7. He has lived there for the past 10 years. They have hand-delivered Council Member packets to his residence for the past 15 months.”
Based on the City’s decision of disqualification, Councilman Altgelt filed for write-in candidacy on Friday and will be placed on the ballot as a write-in candidate.
“I am overwhelmed by the positive outpouring of support from hundreds of District 7 residents and many Laredoans. The citizens are sick and tired of being manipulated and they are prepared to take a stand against corruption in their City. I will continue to fight for the residents of District 7 and the people of Laredo.” Said Councilman George Altgelt.
