TAMIU Ranked 4th Again as ‘Best Bang for Buck Among Southern Colleges’

(Laredo, Tx)-Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has been ranked 4th for “Best Bang for the Buck” among the nation’s Southern Schools by Washington Monthly Magazinein its 2015 College Guide, dubbed “The Other College Guide.” This is the second year in a row that TAMIU has been so honored.
The Guide ranks institutions by social mobility, civic engagement and research; and also measures those that are the best value based on “net price” — which the Guide explains is affordability and how well universities do in graduating students.
The Guide calculates TAMIU’s net price for all students as $1,820, or $12,816 less than the net price at third-ranked University of Texas at Austin ($14,636).
TAMIU ranked fourth and was joined by other Texas institutions in the Top Five: Texas A&M University at number 2, UT-Austin at number three and UT-Pan Am at number five. Other A&M System campuses included Prairie View A&M University at 21, Texas A&M University-Commerce at 22, Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 44 and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi at 83.
TAMIU President Dr. Ray Keck said the repeat ranking is great news and endorses the University’s efforts to keep costs down.
“We keep costs low with innovative programs like flex scheduling and fixed rate tuition — both of which really help students and their parents. This ranking is an important repeat among other recent accolades and affirms that what we’re doing is right,” Dr. Keck said.
Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp also lauded the recognition the rankings provide.
“With a tradition of selfless service that starts at Texas A&M University and permeates through the entire System, it is not a surprise that our schools did well in this ranking,” said Chancellor Sharp said, “Our students, at all of our universities, have their priorities straight when it comes to not just doing well for themselves, but doing good for others.”
The magazine issued separate rankings for masters and baccalaureate-granting institutions, which the editors said “serve as the workhorse institutions of American higher education, providing affordable degrees with strong ties to regional economies.”
The Master’s Universities list included TAMIU (52), Prairie View A&M (137), West Texas A&M (307), and Tarleton State University (388). Texas A&M University-Galveston was ranked 78th on the Baccalaureate Universities list.
TAMIU recently ranked in fifth in Texas by Money Magazine for providing the best value for tuition dollar and was the only Texas institution to receive a grade of “A” for value-added, based on “how well students at each school did versus what would be expected given their economic and academic backgrounds and the institution’s mix of majors.”
Also, U.S. News and World Report this month listed TAMIU as No. 1 among 10 colleges with the highest percentage of Hispanic student enrollment in the nation.
TAMIU’s Fall semester classes began Aug. 19. Late registration continues through Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Founded in 1969, Washington Monthly is a bimonthly nonprofit magazine covering politics, government, culture and the media. The magazine’s editors explicitly reject the criteria used by U.S. News & World Report, describing that publication’s approach as identifying schools “that spend the most money, exclude the most students and impress a small circle of elites.”
