Introducing Laredo’s Newest Tourism Attractions

Laredo, Texas – Did you ever think that you could meet the rebel that once declared Laredo as the capitol city of the Republic of the Rio Grande? Did you ever give pause to the delicious and special spices in your Mexican food? How about your downtown Laredo art consciousness?
Well, all these things are answered in a series of new events unveiled recently by the Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission and a variety of local private sector, non-profit and attractions’ partners.
In an announcement and then a special heritage tourism workshop, Texas and Laredo authorities gave guests and local media a preview of the newest tourism attractions to be available to locals, as well as, visitors in the Gateway City. Three separate projects that in some cases contain an attraction coupled with another similar complementary activity were introduced during an event earlier this month.
1. Teatro Tejano de la Calle: A tour in the form of a new curbside history lesson, taught by Laredo’s historical figures brought to life by a troop of local actors; to be held every first Thursday and third Saturday of the month. Tickets are $5.00 and available at La Posada one hour before the event beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tour begins from hotel lobby at 6:30 p.m. Contact La Posada Hotel for updates and questions, 956.722.1701.
2. Frontera Fusion: An immersive culinary experience, hosted at two different locations La India Tasting Room Café and Vega’s Interiores Mexicanos. Vega’s holds classes every first Saturday of the month for fee at 3:00 p.m.; reservations may be made at (956) 645-2512. La India hosts classes every first Friday of the month for a fee at 3:00 p.m.; reservations may be made at (956) 723-3772.
3. CaminArte + Artisan Bazaar: an art and architectural walk combined with an open air Mercado at Plaza San Agustin. The art walk event is free and open to the public every first Friday of the month, except in April. Look for the added bonus of shopping in the Plaza at the Artisan Bazaar in June, September and December. This event is also free and open to the public. “These new tourism products came about as a result of a lot of work and collaboration from our local partners and because the Texas Historical Commission identified Laredo as a place to be when it came to the Hispanic culture and heritage,” stated Blasita J. Lopez, LCVB Director. “I am so thankful that they had a vision for our community and that my administrators, Mayor and Council Members, as well as, our very hard-working collaborators shared in that vision to launch these exciting new activities for many to enjoy.”
Many entities joined in on the effort to renew Laredo’s tourism offerings including Laredo Main Street; Avenida San Bernardo; La Posada Hotel; The Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association; Laredo Center for the Arts; City of Laredo Historic District Landmark Board; La India Tasting Room Café; Vega’s Interiores Mexicanos; TAMIU’s Casa Ortiz; Gallery 201; On the Rocks Tavern; and the Webb County Historical Commission.
