(Laredo, Tx)- This week City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas welcomed representatives from the Laredo Police Department Community Relations Unit, EMTs from the Laredo Police Department, as well as representatives from Walmart to proclaim August as Purple Ribbon Awareness Month. The purple ribbon signifies the angels who have died because a caregiver left them locked in a hot car.
This campaign is especially important in Laredo, not just for the month of August, but throughout the summer months, where temperatures can soar into the triple digits daily. If anyone sees a child in a locked car, they are urged to contact 9-1-1 immediately and help prevent a tragedy from occurring in our community. LFD EMTs recounted a recent case of finding a child in a locked car whose temperature had already soared.
The child is fine, but it could have been a very different outcome. Walmart will have associates roaming the parking lots, to make sure there are not any children left behind.
