UISD to Host Annual Free Dyslexia Awareness Parent Festival – October 26th

Difficulty learning to speak, trouble learning letters and their sounds, difficulty organizing writing and spoken language, trouble memorizing number facts, difficulty reading quickly enough to comprehend, trouble persisting with and comprehending longer reading assignments, and correctly doing math operations, are tasks students with Dyslexia experience on a daily basis. And in an effort to understand and help students with Dyslexia, the United Independent School District will be hosting their annual Dyslexia Awareness Festival for parents. The free event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 26, 2012 at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex, Room 1 & 2 located at 5208 Santa Claudia Lane .
“UISD wants parents to attend this event so they can be given the tools and information necessary to help their children in school and in life,” said UISD Section 504/Dyslexia Coordinator Brenda Benavides. “Parents can make a big difference in improving the life of a child who has been identified with Dyslexia. It’s all about staying involved in and throughout the child’s school year because it’s a key part of success,” she continued.
Indeed, parents will be provided with information at the event, in English and Spanish, which will include information on the following: characteristics of Dyslexia and related disorders; assessment and identification of Dyslexia, effective strategies to support students with Dyslexia at home; and information on UISD’s Scottish Rite Reading Program.
“I highly encourage our parents to attend this informative event. Information about Dyslexia can help you better understand and assist your child,” said UISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos.
It is important to note that not all students who have difficulties with the skills listed above are dyslexic. Formal assessment of reading, language, and writing skills is the only way to confirm an identification of suspected dyslexia.
