TAMIU Celebrates ‘Spirit Week’ Jan. 29-Feb. 4

(Laredo, Tx)- Show off your pride and join Texas A&M International University students and fans at Spirit Week Sunday, Jan. 29 – Saturday, Feb. 4.

         All events are free for TAMIU students with a valid ID and most events are free to the public.

         “After a very successful first year, we expanded the activities and events even further in an effort to bring more pride to the TAMIU campus and celebrate the achievements of our athletic teams,” said Miguel A. Treviño, associate director, Office of Student Affairs (OSA).

         Treviño noted the events are an effort to increase a sense of school spirit on campus and to vote for Mr. and Ms. TAMIU 2012.

         Events include a pep rally, tailgate party, Spirit Week after party and game day fiesta.

         Spirit Week kicks off Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. with a shopping cart decorating party in the Student Center (SC) ballroom.

         The rest of the schedule is as follows:

         Monday, Jan. 30­—Maroon Monday, Court Voting, Student Government Association (SGA) Shopping Cart Parade, TAMIU Men’s Basketball vs. Dallas Baptist

         Everyone is encouraged to wear maroon and silver all day to show his or her school spirit and pride! Students should keep an eye on the OSA Facebook page, facebook.com/txamiu.osa, to find out where to win a free Spirit Week t-shirt.

Students will also have the opportunity to vote for Mr. and Ms. TAMIU 2012. Voting is online at onecard.tamiu.edu

         Students’ eco-friendly designs will take center stage at the SGA Shopping Cart Paradestarts at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Center patio.

         At 7 p.m., fans will paint the stands maroon as the TAMIU men’s basketball team takes on Heartland Conference rival Dallas Baptist in the Kinesiology-Convocation Building (KCB).

         Tuesday, Jan. 31—Court Voting, Freeze Frame Photo Shoot

         Voting continues all day for Mr. and Ms. TAMIU.

         Students will have the opportunity to get a free commemorative snapshot and tag friends, family and anyone else who is a part of their University memories. Freeze Frame photo shoot starts at 11 a.m. in the SC rotunda.

         Wednesday, Feb. 1—Court Voting, Campus Activities Board Pep Rally

         Voting for Mr. and Ms. TAMIU 2012 continues online.

         Students are encouraged to attend the pep rally on the SC patio and bring their energy to make sure everyone knows the Dustdevils are out.

         Thursday, Feb. 2—Pre-game Tailgate, TAMIU Women’s Basketball vs. Lady Hilltoppers, Mr. and Ms. TAMIU Coronation, TAMIU Men’s Basketball vs. Hilltoppers, Spirit Week After Party

         The Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) will host a pre-game tailgate with hot dogs, hamburgers and other goodies at 1:30 p.m. in the KCB garden.

         The Lady Dustdevils will take on the Lady Hilltoppers from St. Edward’s University at 5:30 p.m. in the KCB.

         Mr. and Ms. TAMIU 2012 will take their crowns in the KCB at 7:15 p.m.

         At 7:30 p.m., the TAMIU men’s basketball team will take to the hardwood against the Hilltoppers.

         The Spirit Week after party will celebrate the coronation of Mr. and Ms. TAMIU in the SC ballroom at 9 p.m.

         Friday, Feb. 3—Game Day Fiesta, Baseball Game

         Celebrate Game Day Fiesta as the Dustdevils take on the University of Texas – Permian Basin (UTPB) Falcons at the Jorge Haynes Baseball Field.

         The doubleheader continues at 3 p.m. as the Dustdevils open the 2012 season.

         Saturday, Feb. 4—Baseball Game, Men’s Basketball Game

         The series finale for the Dustdevils against the UTPB Falcons continues at noon in theJorge Haynes Baseball Field.

         At 2 p.m., the TAMIU men’s basketball team will take on the UTPB Falcons in the KCB.
