Season Greetings Concert at TAMIU Saturday, Dec. 3

(Laredo, Tx)-On Saturday, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo, the Laredo Philharmonic Chorale and the LaredoPhilharmonic Youth Orchestra will fill Texas A&M International University ‘s Recital Hall with sounds of the season in a free concert.
“This is the second year that we have collaborated on this concert,” said conductor Brendan Townsend, TAMIU’s director of Music Programs.
The program prepared by the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo includes Beethoven’s short, but lively Eighth Symphony as well Weber’s Oberon Overture and a short work by Iowa composer Linda Robbins Coleman, “For a Beautiful Land.”
“Beethoven’s 8th Symphony is a tremendously powerful and beautiful work and has given us lots to work on,” said TAMIU student Melissa Treviño, the orchestra’s concertmaster, “We have learned a lot about Beethoven and his compositional style in our work on this piece.”
The Laredo Philharmonic Chorale, under the direction of Paul Foster, will present three Spanish Carols, a Christmas Madrigal, and a Choral Fantasy based on old carols arranged by Gustav Holst, featuring accompaniment by the United Methodist Church Handbell Choir.
The Laredo Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Bea and Nick Balli, will present three numbers: all arrangements of well-known overtures. This is the second year that the Youth Orchestra, which is funded by the D.D. Hachar Charitable Trust, performs in concert with the Chamber Orchestra of Laredo.
“I am very proud of the way that this young orchestra is developing,” said Bea Balli, “The orchestra rehearses every Monday at Lamar Middle School and is working towards its own full concert, which will be held in the Spring.”
The Chamber Orchestra of Laredo members will also join with the Laredo Philharmonic Youth Orchestra members to perform Christmas Music for Orchestra, a collection of carols appropriate to the season.
This is a concert that will be sure to please many with its diversity and range of styles.
The concert is free and open to the public and begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. at TAMIU’s Center for the Fine & Performing Arts Recital Hall.
