National School Bus Safety Week Parade and Proclamation

The Laredo Independent School District’s Transportation Department will be celebrating this year’s National School Bus Safety Week scheduled October 17- 21 with several events.
The celebration will kick-off on Tuesday, October 18, with a parade starting at 9:30 a.m. at Veterans Field and ending at the LISD Student Activity Center (SAC). Immediately following the parade, a proclamation ceremony honoring all bus drivers will be held at the SAC.
National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program designed to promote school bus safety. The program is also an excellent way for everyone – parents, students, teachers, motorist, school bus operators, and school administrators to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety.
Every weekday in the school year, the LISD Transportation Department operates 79 yellow school buses and provides safe transportation for more than 4,300 school-aged children on a daily basis.
“The LISD Transportation Department works hard to make sure that the safety of the children of LISD is a number one priority,” stated Rick Gonzalez, LISD Road Field Supervisor.
Research shows that children are safer riding in a school bus than they are in their family vehicle. However, the most dangerous part of the ride for children is when they get on and off
the school bus. Here are a few safety tips for students riding or crossing a school bus.
Students riding a school bus should always:
• Arrive at the bus stop five minutes early.
• Stand at least five giant steps (10 feet) away from the edge of the road.
• Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says its okay before stepping onto the bus.
• Be careful that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps or dangling objects do not get caught in the handrail or door when exiting the bus.
• Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus.
Crossing students should:
• Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus.
• Walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to a point at least 10 giant steps ahead of the bus.
• Be sure the bus driver can see them, and they can see the bus driver.
• Wait for the driver’s signal to cross.
