CUELLAR ANNOUNCES $5.47 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS TO CITY OF LAREDO

Washington D.C. – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced that City of Laredo has been awarded three grants, totaling $5,477,864 in federal funds, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The City of Laredo will receive $3,936,450.00 from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, a non-competitive program that provides direct annual funding to qualified entitlement communities.
The HOME program awarded Laredo $1,381,796.00. HOME provides formula grants to States and localities that communities use-often in partnership with local nonprofit groups-to fund a wide range of activities that build, buy, and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income people.
An additional grant for $159,618.00 was awarded by the Emergency Shelter Grants (ESG) Program. ESG provides annual grants to State, local government and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.
HUD awards grants to entitlement community grantees to carry out a wide range of community development activities directed toward revitalizing neighborhoods, economic development, and providing improved community facilities and services.
Entitlement communities develop their own programs and funding priorities. However, grantees must give priority to activities which benefit low- and moderate-income persons. A grantee may also carry out activities which aid in the prevention or elimination of slums or blight.
