Broncos drop a tight one in extra innings to the White Wings, swept in double header; fall to fifth place in United League

The Broncos (26-33) tied the game in the eighth inning to send the ball game into it’s second extra frame only to give up one run and strand the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and fall 3-2 to the White Wings (25-31). The Broncos have now lost five in a row and fall behind the White Wings in the United League standings by a half game out of fourth place. Game two of the double header featured the United League strike out leader RHP Santo Hernandez (5-3) vs RHP Andres Rosales (3-3) of the White Wings.

 Neither team scored in the first two innings of the ball game, the White Wings stranded a runner on first base in each of the first two innings, while the Broncos mustered only two base runners, both gifted via the walk in the first two innings.

 In the bottom of the third the Broncos took the lead.  Jason Diaz reached on an infield single with one away.  Rosales then proceeded to throw two straight wild pitches that moved Diaz to third base.  Mike Murphy hit a fly ball to right field that brought home Diaz and gave the Broncos the 1-0 lead.

 The score remained 1-0 Broncos until the top of the fifth, when Welinson Baez hit his fourth home run of the season to tie the game.   Game two of the double header thoroughly dominated by pitching on both sides of the diamond.   Hernandez, for the Broncos went six innings, striking out 10, while only allowing four hits and one run; he walked two. 

 Andres Rosales for the White Wings pitched six innings, striking out twelve, while allowing four hits and one run; he walked two. 

LHP Brian Buchanan (5-4) came in and pitched a scoreless seventh inning and got the Broncos back to the dugout.

 RHP Miguel Matos came in for the White Wings and got a huge double play with the winning run on first base when Doug Thennis attempted to lay down a bunt. The Bunt went right back to Matos who had plenty of time to double of the runner at first and end the inning.

 Extra innings in game two of the double header at Veterans Field.  Brian Buchanan came back out for his second inning of relief against the White Wings.  Buchanan got the first batter of the inning to fly out to second baseman Mike Murphy.  Yuery’s Tejeda then reached on an error by third baseman Jonathan Cisneros and the go ahead run was aboard for the White Wings.  Tejeda stole second base and after a strikeout, with Eric Gonzalez at the plate Tejeda stole third base. A throwing error charged to Salvador Paniagua allowed Tejeda to score the go ahead run in the eighth.

 The Broncos, needing one run to keep the ball game got Jason Diaz aboard with a lead off walk.  D.J Dixon, with one out singled and moved Diaz to third base.  A wild pitch by RHP Miguel Matos allowed Diaz to score the tying run and we were knotted at 2-2 heading to ninth.

 Buchanan came out for his third inning of relief in the ninth.  He retired Kevin Griffen for the first out and then walked Welinson Baez.  Baez stole second base and came home to score on the RBI single by Javis Diaz to give the White Wings a 3-2 lead.

 The Broncos had their backs against the walls for the second straight inning in game two of the double header. RHP Mickey Cassidy (0-0) came on for the save and Nick Mahin led off with a single and Carlos Arroyo reached on an infield single.  Doug Thennis then laid down a bunt where the White Wings were able to retire the lead runner at third.  Ryan Flynn then hit a ground ball that moved both runners up a base. Jason Diaz was intentionally walked with two outs to load the bases.  Mike Murphy, on the eighth pitch he saw from Cassidy popped out to end the game.
