Eagle Pass, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry seized a significant cache of assault weapons and tactical equipment during a routine outbound inspection.

On March 3, 2010, CBP officers working outbound inspection operations alongside Border Patrol agents and Maverick County sheriff’s deputies at Bridge I referred a 1999 BMW 540i for an outbound inspection. During the inspection, CBP officers noted anomalies in a speaker box. Further inspection of the speaker box and spare tire well yielded a cache of weapons and tactical gear including the following: one Stag 15 5.56mm rifle, one YHM 15-E25 .223 caliber rifle, one Olympic Arms PCR-97 .223-caliber rifle, one Bushmaster XM-15 .223-caliber rifle, one Colt Sporter .223-caliber rifle, one DPMS Panther Arms A-15 .223-caliber rifle, one Glock 9mm pistol, one Beretta 9mm pistol, seven 30-round assault rifle magazines, four pistol magazines, four tactical assault vests, four pairs of tactical gloves, three pairs of tactical thigh holsters and two pairs of Smith and Wesson handcuffs.  Three males, a 20-year-old, 21-year-old and a 27 year-old, all U.S. citizens from San Antonio, were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) special agents for further investigation. CBP officers seized the weapons, tactical gear and the vehicle.

“This is a fantastic seizure of high-powered assault rifles and tactical gear for CBP at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry,” said Michael Perez, Acting Port Director, Eagle Pass and Del Rio. “It exemplifies the true spirit of cooperation between federal, state and local law enforcement partners to stem the illicit flow of weapons to Mexico.”
