LPD Bestowed with William H. Spurgeon Award

The LPD Explorer post presented Chief Carlos Maldonado with the William H. Spurgeon award for the department’s excellent Explorer program. The LPD Explorers, led by Sergeant Eduardo S. Cabello, traveled to Corpus Christi, TX. The South Texas Council held the annual Awards Banquet on Friday Jan. 29 at the Lexington Ship. The Spurgeon award (read e-mail attachment for detailed explanation & history of the award) is the highest recognition for individuals and organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program. The LPD Explorer program has been in existence for 30 years. The past 11 years have been under the direction of Sergeant Cabello. The group has received various recognitions and won different competitions around the state. “This award is the highest honor we have ever received” said Sgt. Cabello. Chief Maldonado states, “This recognition is testament to the hard work and commitment of Sgt. Cabello and the explorers.” The chief adds, “The department is committed to support positive programs such as the LPD Explorers in order to inspire young minds who are the leaders of tomorrow.”
Some participants of the LPD Explorer program have gone on to become LPD Police Officers and serve the Laredo Community today. The LPD Explorer program is soon to have a registration drive on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 3 pm at the LPD headquarters located at 4712 Maher Ave. Please see attached e-mail for more details.
