“Operation Clean-Up” hits District III
Laredo, TX—Inspectors from various City departments will team up on Friday, January 29, 2010 to make a sweep of an area in City Council District III educating about and enforcing City of Laredo codes.

The Vidal M. Trevino Magnet School will be holding recruitment week for LISD middle school students with eye-catching Mardi Gras style parades at all LISD middle schools.
The VMT recruitment week will kick-off on Monday, January 25, at 12:00 noon at Cigarroa Middle School.

Amateur boxing match to help raise funds for youth sports activities
Laredo, TX—While Laredo’s bravest usually provide gentle, medical attention to those in need, some firefighters will be delivering hits, punches and a pounding, all for a good cause. Guns-N-Hoses of Laredo, a non-profit organization made up of Laredo firefighters, will be hosting an amateur boxing match versus BorderTown Pugilist, off-duty Border Patrol agents, in a 10 bout match, raising funds for youth sports activities.

Salinas, in Washington for the 78th Winter Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors, met with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder after the Attorney General’s speech to the Conference of Mayors. Leyendecker Elementary School, in conjunction with the Laredo Chess Club, is hosting the first chess tournament of the year. The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, January 23, at 12:30 p.m. at the Leyendecker Elementary School gymnasium located at 1311 Garden St.
The four round Swiss System tournament is open to all scholastic chess players K-12 grade. The contest will have a USCF rated and a non rated beginners division, each with primary, elementary, middle, and high school sections.
