LISD Campus Crime Stoppers names Queen and Princess

The LISD Campus Crime Stoppers program recently held a pageant and selected a queen from an LISD high school and a princess from an LISD middle school. Tannya Benavides was named 2009-2010 Miss Crime Stoppers Queen while Brittany Winters was named 2009-2010 Miss Crime Stoppers Princess.
Benavides and Winters were both selected based on their grade point average, teachers’ evaluations, and judges scores on the basis of poise, appearance, dress and stage presentation.
The young ladies will represent Campus Crime Stoppers during the upcoming Washington’s Birthday Celebration parades, Laredo Crime Stoppers Menudo Bowl, and other community events throughout the year.
Benavides is currently a senior at Nixon High School. Her extracurricular activities include VMT Crime Stoppers member, Golden Spurs Marshall, Mustang Band member, LISD/VMT Teens in the Driver Seat Program secretary, National Honor Society member, Senior Class member, Culture Club member at Laredo Community College, VMT Ballet Folklorico/Flamenco dance team, Miss Laredo Crime Stoppers Princess, and 2009 Miss Laredo LULAC.
Winters is an 8th grader at Lamar Middle School. Her extracurricular activities include basketball and volleyball team captain, track relay team member, Student Council President, UIL Dictionary and Listening Skills member. Her academic achievements include September 8th Grader of the Month, LULAC Top Scholar recipient, Duke University State Scholar. Winters has also been recognized by her peers as 6th and 7th grade class favorite, 8th grade most athletic and best all-around class favorite.
Judges for the event were Webb County Sheriff Chief Pete Arredondo, Officer Bridgette Grant; Amador Juarez, Laredo Crime Stoppers President, Deputy Blanca Izaguirre, who donated the sashes for the queen and princess; Colleen Rodriguez, former Miss Crime Stoppers; and Campus Crime Stoppers Advisory Board Member; Ramiro Saucedo, president of Campus Crime Stoppers Advisory Board; and Jose A. Valdez, Jr. City Councilman District 7. The master of ceremonies was Larry Hernandez, vice president of the advisory board who donated the sound system.
