Webb County Sheriff’s Office Seized $171,520 in US Currency

Laredo, Texas – On May, 04, 2009, at approximately 12 noon, Webb County Sheriff’s Deputies initiated a traffic stop at mile marker 25 on IH 35. Deputies conducted the traffic stop on  a Honda compact car bearing Mexico License plates, Deputies interviewed  a female driver who was carrying a 5 year old in the vehicle.  As Deputies interviewed the driver,  they analyzed conflicting stories as to her destination or visits in the United States.  The driver gave Deputies consent to search the vehicle, as Deputies proceeded to search, they observed discrepancies along the chassis of the vehicle.  Deputies discovered 14 bundles  of US currency wrapped in duct tape tied together with a string, the amount of currency totaled $171,520.  The driver, an unidentified, was interviewed and has not been charged as of press time.  The Webb County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Border Patrol, The District Attorney’s Office and Immigration and Custom Enforcement

“The ability to follow instincts and be able to detect such a large load of cash, determines the commitment from our Deputies to combat illegal activity.” Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.
