Today, represenatives from the Muscular Dystrophy Association, City of Laredo Fire Chief Steve Landin, and other fire fighters, joined Mayor Raul G. Salinas as he welcomed Vidal Lozano Jr., this year’s MDA’s local spokesperson, to promote the firefighters’ “Fill the Boot” campaign, the annual MDA fundraiser held by Laredo’s bravest. Representatives with the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of the Greater Laredo area joined Mayor Salinas to proclaim the month Financial Literacy Month, to encourage citizens to become responsible with their finances, to help then achieve their dreams of home ownership, responsible payment history and other factors that can help individuals to provide for their family. Yesterday, Mayor Raul G. Salinas and Council Member Mike Garza, along with Ronnie Acosta, Community Development Director; Arturo Garcia, CD Asst. Director; Maria G. Soliz, Acting Director for the Laredo Public Library, welcomed several volunteers with the City of Laredo, to thank them for the tremendous contribution they, and countless other volunteers provide to the City of Laredo, in terms of services provided and dollars saved. This week is National Volunteer Week in the City of Laredo.

Earlier today, City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas and City Secretary Gustavo Guevara hosted visitors from the City of SanMenXia, China. Hosted by Texas A&M International University, the visitors stopped to visit with Mayor Salinas to discuss opportunities for becoming a Sister City and other business and trade opportunities.
Mayor Salinas gave Vice Mayor Xinhua Su a pin from Laredo and Texas, as well as other gifts to commemorate the visit. Dr. Haibo Wang, professor at TAMIU, served as translator throughout the visit. Mayor Su was so impressed with the …

NEW LEGISLATION CREATES 175,000 NEW VOLUNTEER SERVICE POSITIONS NATIONWIDE, ELIMINATES COST-SHARING FOR COLONIAS
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The President today signed into law the Edward Kennedy Serve America Act, H.R. 1388, a major reauthorization and expansion of national volunteer programs. The law launches a new era of volunteerism by increasing the number of volunteers in federal service programs from 75,000 to 250,000, and it establishes new volunteer opportunities for students, retirees, and veterans.

At last night’s City Council meeting, Mayor Raul G. Salinas and the Laredo City Council recognized three local journaslists from KLDO-Univision, for their years of service in the local news industry, highlighting and commending them for their professionalism, integrity, determination to get the story, their involvement in informing the community about news and community events and delivering the news in an objective manner. Juan Rodriguez was recognized for 30 years of service; both Lupita Benavides and Marissa Limon were recognized for 20 years.
